There is an untouched, serene quality to the landscape of Mid Wales. Away from the crowded tourist hotspots, the rolling hills, ancient woodlands, and crystal-clear river valleys create a vibrant sanctuary for some of the UK’s most iconic and elusive wildlife.

At Powys River Pods, located just outside of Builth Wells, nature isn’t a destination you have to drive to—it surrounds you the moment you step outside. Perched quietly on the elevated banks of the River Irfon, our three luxury glamping pods provide a front-row seat to the natural world.

Whether you are an avid bird watcher, an amateur photographer, or simply someone looking to disconnect and recharge in the fresh Welsh air, here is the incredible wildlife you can expect to encounter during your stay.

The Jewels of the River: Otters and Kingfishers

The River Irfon is highly regarded for its exceptional water quality, which supports a thriving aquatic ecosystem. Because the river is healthy, it plays host to two of the UK’s most beloved riverside residents:

  • The Elusive European Otter: Yes, they really are here! In fact, we named one of our pet-friendly pods Otter because these playful mammals have been spotted swimming and hunting in the waters right alongside our site. For the best chance of a sighting, keep an eye on the riverbanks during the quiet, misty hours of early dawn or twilight.
  • The Iridescent Kingfisher: Keep your eyes peeled for a sudden, electric flash of blue and orange darting low across the water. Kingfishers regularly hunt along our mile of private river frontage, using overhanging branches as perches to dive for small fish.

Eyes on the Skies: Bird Watching in Powys

The skies above the pods and the facing Epynt Mountains are constantly alive with avian activity. Thanks to local conservation efforts over the decades, Mid Wales is now a world-class destination for bird-of-prey watching.

  • Red Kites: Once critically endangered, the magnificent Red Kite is now a common and breathtaking sight over our glamping site. You can regularly watch these elegant birds soaring high overhead, recognisable by their distinctive angled wings and deeply forked tails.
  • Buzzards and Peregrine Falcons: Listen out for the mewing call of resident buzzards circling the woodland edges, and keep a lookout for the lightning-fast silhouette of a peregrine falcon hunting across the valley.
  • Riverside Dippers and Wagtails: Right at water level, you’ll constantly spot charismatic Dippers bobbing up and down on the river rocks before submerging completely to hunt for freshwater insects.

A Sanctuary for Four-Legged Explorers (And Your Dog!)

Because we know that a true nature holiday isn’t complete without your family pet, our pods (Kingfisher, Heron and Otter) are completely dog-friendly. The riverside meadows and nearby country lanes offer endless sniffing and exploring opportunities for your four-legged companion.

As night falls, the wildlife experience shifts. Sitting out on your private decking with our provided BBQ, the valley falls quiet except for the soothing sounds of the rushing river and the hooting of tawny owls in the surrounding woods. Because Powys is famous for its dark skies and lack of light pollution, a clear night reveals a breathtaking canopy of stars overhead.

Eco-Comfort in the Heart of Nature

Our hand-built, self-contained wooden pods are designed to blend seamlessly into this tranquil environment while providing all the modern comforts of home. You get the immersive connection of camping—listening to the river, watching the wildlife, smelling the fresh country air—but with a plush double bed, a modern en-suite bathroom, and powerful heating to keep you cosy.

Whether you are watching an otter play in the river eddies from the window of your pod or tracking a Red Kite across the mountains, Powys River Pods offers a truly immersive Mid Wales wildlife glamping experience.
